Persian Cats

Probably the most famous cat breed, this is in fact one of the oldest recognized breeds in the world. The Persian is a natural breed, which developed in Asia hundreds, if not thousands of years ago. The first documented cats of this kind were imported from Persia in the Seventeenth century, hence the name Persian cats.

The most striking feature of the Persian is the very long silky coat. They also have a unique body build which is stocky and solid, with relatively short legs. Modern show quality Persian cats are bred for a distinct flat face where the nose is "pushed" in. This can be a problem when brought to extreme, and some these cats suffer from health issues relating to the eyes and nose. Some people prefer the more natural "doll-face" look, but these cats are not up to breed standard as set by the various cat fancy associations. It's a delicate balance between health and appearance, which makes breeding these felines a unique challenge.

Persian cats can come in a variety of coat colors and patterns. In the US, color-point Persians have become a separate breed: Himalyan Cats. Other than that, all other varieties fall within the Persian breed category and they can be in solid colors such as black, white or blue, bi-colors in various patterns, tabby cats of all shades, calicos and torties. The long hair allows for special effects that are harder to achieve with other breeds: the smoked and shaded varieties.

Persian cats are typically laid back and relaxed cats. They are affectionate and friendly, but not as active as other breeds. They do require a thorough grooming routine for their coat, as well as for their eyes (in the peke-face variety).
